Thoughts and Reviews From a Protective Mother

1.6 Million Delta Enterprises Drop-Side Cribs Recalled

MSNBC has an article on the recall.  Two infant deaths have been linked to faulty hardware, which exposes a suffocation hazard.  This is my worst fear as a parent with a baby sleeping in a crib in another room.

Hiatus, but I’m back!

It has been far too long since I posted on here!  My son had his first ear infection as well as a cold virus and his fever quickly shot up to around 104F.  Now I come to find out my husband ran really high fevers when he was a baby.  It is amazing all the things that come right back around now that we’re parents!  At any rate, I’m back in full swing and able to get back to Careful Mommy and post some thoughts and reviews.  I’m going to start posting great deals I find.  I would like it to be a daily deal type post, but I think a couple times a week is more realistic.

Stay tuned!

Safety Alert! Simplicity 3-in-1 Bassinet

The Chicago Tribune broke this story a while back, but it is gaining national attention due to a second death attributed to safety defects in the bassinet design.  You can see in the photo there is a section of the bassinet that folds down for easier access to the child.  However, you can also see the metal bar going across the bassinet, which is believed to have caused the two deaths due to strangulation.

“Then, Thursday evening, the agency released 66 model numbers affected and announced that six major retailers voluntarily agreed to recall the products in question: convertible “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinets manufactured by the now-defunct Simplicity Inc. of Reading, Pa.”

Around the ‘Net: Angel Care Movement Sensor

c|net has a quick summary of the Angel Care Movement sensor, which detects your baby’s subtle movements while breathing and sounds an alarm if movement is not detected.

“Many parents, especially new parents, have so many things to worry about when it comes to the safety of their babies and The AngelCare Movement Sensor with Sound Monitor can considerably alleviate at least one.”

Best iPhone Applications for Moms

Being a careful mommy I find a way to maximize everything I own in order to make my life easier.  My husband recently purchased an iPhone 3G and has been demonstrating all of the great new applications available.  I plan to get my own iPhone in the near future, but until then I have been looking at the software to see what I could use.  Here are the few that I’ve been able to find:

First I will get the obvious out of the way and explain why the basic iPhone applications help mommies stay organized, happy and connected. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Site Issues

My hosting provider is having terrible issues right now and they had to take all of their sites down and slowly bring them up.  Obviously if you’re reading this it’s up for the time being.

On another note, I found out Costco has Similac Isomil 36oz for $30!  That’s a great deal!  The formula is normally 24oz/$26.99 retail, which equals $1.12/oz.  The Costco deal works out to $0.83/oz!

Update 8/26: I just talked to the hosting provider again and put a little pressure on their 99.9% uptime commitment.  It looks like they were able to finally throw the switch and get the site running again.  Funny how that works, eh?

Can a Pacifier Cause Gas in Babies?

My Son's Favorite Binky

I’m slowly becoming a self-made gas expert thanks to the tummy passed down to my son from his father. It seems like he will never grow out of his digestive issues! From breast milk to numerous formulas and tonics like Mylicon and Gripe Water, we have tried almost everything to get those nasty little bubbles out of his tummy.

This got me to thinking, can a pacifier cause gas? [Read the rest of this entry...]

V-Tech Learn & Discover Driver Review

My son has been grabbing things since he was 2 1/2 months old.  Granted, his early attempts were clumsy and often missed their mark, but now he is four months old and able to hang on to anything small enough to fit in his hand.  He also has fairly good coordination and can push and pull things in front of him.  We have a Fisher Price Rainforest Gym that he used to love, but laying on his back and batting things just doesn’t hold his interest anymore.

My husband and I had dinner at a friend’s house last week and they showed us the V Tech Learn and Discover Driver.  The box says 6+ months, but our son immediately started bopping the buttons (sometimes on accident) and pulling the wheel.  The toy is great because there are so many things to hit even mistaken bumps cause the toy to light up and encourage the baby with music.  This rewarding activity promotes learning by teaching the baby cause and effect.  There are three buttons on the left, a mirror, three slot machine style music makers, a wheel, a gearshift, and a stoplight that flashes.  Every bump and pull activates a different tune or sing-along.  For $14.99 at Amazon this thing will keep your baby occupied for a while.

Baby is Now on Similac Isomil Soy Formula

It’s been four days since we switched him to Similac Isomil and so far, so good. He still doesn’t want to poo-poo, but I’m starting to think it’s just his normal routine. We’re giving him half diluted prune juice morning and night to get things going, but no luck so far. He doesn’t seem to be eating less yet so no need to try anything drastic. I just can’t imagine where he stores it all in his little tummy!

The Similac Isomil is actually more pleasant smelling than the Similac Sensitive. My son has a deep baby wrinkle around his neck that likes to trap dripping formula and the sensitive stunk the place up if I didn’t wipe well enough.

The screaming fits are now isolated to cranky, doesn’t want to sleep moments.  He’s gaining weight and growing like a healthy little boy so we know he’s doing fine.  We haven’t made any baby purchases this week to give an opinion on, but I did end up getting a cushy leather ottoman to use as our coffee table so the little man doesn’t bump his head on our old, sharp glass table.
